Tom yum kung, squid salad, curry, coconut milk, lime and lots of desserts…the 2019 ASEAN Gourmet Festival in the capital is preparing a feast of authentic Thai cuisine to satisfy Beijing's gourmet palates.
Themed “A Harmony of Wonderful Thai Flavors”, the 2019 festival will offer a panoramic view of Thai culture at Minzu Hotel through Thailand's signature delicacies, handicrafts, art and performances.
But what determines the unique taste of Thai cuisine? What are the similarities between Chinese and Thai cuisine? In what areas is Thai cuisine influenced by other Asian countries?
Thai Ambassador to China Piriya Kenpong and Bangkok Bold Kitchen chef Noi Uipornchaisakul shared their views with China Daily.
Noi Uiporuncaisakul leads her team from the kitchen to ensure the food maintains its original taste and flavor during the two-week festival.
The 4th ASEAN Gourmet Festival will be held in 2019. Since its inception in 2016, the festival has showcased cuisines from Indonesia, Cambodia and Burma, said Chen Dehai, executive director of the China-ASEAN Center.
Food and tourism foster understanding
The Thai ambassador said that food and tourism are important mediums for promoting understanding between different ethnic groups and intercultural exchange.
More than 10 million Chinese people visited Thailand in 2018. “We (Thais and Chinese) look almost the same. We have the same culture, similar cuisine…The Chinese have confidence in Thailand and we welcome Chinese tourists. “I do,” Kenpon said.
“Chinese tourists are Chinese cultural ambassadors to Thailand, just like us (ambassadors) in China,” he said. “They are exposed to Thai food and are bringing it back to China, especially Beijing. There are more and more Thai restaurants in Beijing.”
